Social Communication Therapy

At SLS we utilize a unique approach to social skills where we target your child’s specific needs in a 1:1 setting or small group setting depending on the needs of your child. We believe in a multidisciplinary therapy approach to meet the individual needs of each child. We incorporate cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) principals in our programs.  For our social communication training much of our teachings are based on the ideas of Michelle Garcia Winner, a groundbreaking therapist and author who specializes in the treatment of individuals with social cognitive deficits. Winner coined the term Social Thinking® to describe the ability of an individual to consider the points of view, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and intentions of others. Winner’s approach, which we embrace and expand upon in our groups, uses very functional ways to break down and teach abstract social-thinking concepts to students. We pull from a variety of other methods/programs, such as the 5-Point Scale, Floortime®, 360 Thinking Program™ and Relationship Development Intervention (RDI).

Groups focus on enhancing social communication, understanding and confidence through games, discussion, role play, video clips and other techniques. Participation may be helpful for children whose peer relationships are hampered by issues related to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD), learning problems, language delays, and auditory processing disorders.

Testimonial

"My daughter, Katie, has been going to SLS for almost 2 years now, and I can't even begin to describe what a wonderful experience it has been for us. Jessica and Christina are so upbeat, fun, and positive. Just the perfect people to work with our kids. Every week Katie looks forward to attending her social group, and it is the only therapy she ever gets upset about missing, which says a lot! They have also gone above and beyond, offering us advice on school, and lending an understanding ear many times. We drive an hour each way to attend group, because they really are the best we have found anywhere! "
